Dehouche on “A few top 'hoods’ in Rio!”

A recent survey carried out by Brazil’s ‘Veja’ magazine questioned Rio de Janeiro’s residents, otherwise known as ‘Cariocas’ on the topic dearest to their hearts, their very own city. The survey sought to discover which neighbourhoods of the city were preferred by residents and also offers some insights for those wishing to travel to here, say locally based luxury travel specialists Dehouche. Everyone’s heard of Copacabana and Ipanema; most international visitors tend to flock to Rio’s beachside neighbourhoods, yet the marvellous city has many more charms at her disposal if you care to look a little harder say Dehouche.

1) Lagoa – Sandwiched between the Atlantic coast and Corcovado mountain, the neighourhood surrounding Rio’s lagoon, was voted by 33% as the best place to keep children entertained and by 44% as the best place to keep in maintain their legendary ‘Carioca shape’. Dehouche are not about to quibble; circled by dramatic peaks and lush green hills, Lagoa is replete with outdoor activities: from cycling and running to skate parks and tree climbing in Parque de Catacumba, the choice is endless and the view unparalleled.

2) Centro- An overwhelming 71% of those interviewed voted for Rio’s business district as the best place to take in cultural events. An eclectic mix of towering skyscrapers interspersed with colonial gems, Centro swarms with crowds of business people in the week and negotiating the pavements awash with street sellers, professional flyer purveyors and market stalls can become social Darwinism; yet come sundown it empties as quickly as it fills to become an out of hours ghost town. Dehouche suggest taking care at evenings and weekends, though there’s no need to bypass the place altogether. The historic centre boasts some 39 cultural venues, including museums, exhibition centres, theatres, historic libraries, music and event venues, monuments, churches and cinemas, as well as a wealth of colonial architecture. The reopening of Rio’s ‘Theatro Municipal’ in centro’s Cinelandia has helped to enrich the cultural scene and the imminent opening of Pinacoteca do Rio on Praça Mauá and the ‘Museu do Amanhã’ (Museum of Tomorrow) designed by Spanish architect Santiago Calatrva should serve to further reinforce this.

3) Jardim Botânico - The neighbourhood which shares its name with the Botanical gardens at its centre, also shares many characteristics with those gardens; foliage abounds with a third of the neighbourhood covered by forest and 68% of Cariocas agreed Jardim Botânico was Rio’s premier green space. The park itself, some 137 hectares within which dwells over 8000 species of plants isn’t the only park either point out Dehouche. Just down the road at the foot of Corcovado mountain lies ‘Parque Lage’, a wild expanse of gardens, caves and waterfalls. Jardim Botânico is also home to some of Rio’s finest restaurants and bars, whose occupants bask in resplendent views ‘Wherever I look, it’s green.’ comments one Carioca. The neighbourhood allows you to feel as though you are in fact, outside the city.

4) Lapa - The birthplace of Bohemia and the epicentre of Rio’s nightlife. Known for its unmistakable white arches, samba clubs and drinking dens, Lapa beat even Leblon and its luxury restaurants to the title of best place to ‘fazer a festa’ brazilian style. In some senses Brazil’s answer to Shoreditch, on a Friday night the streets of Lapa swarm with all manner of characters who gather here on their way to enjoy live samba, choro, forró and hip-hop shows. The neighbourhood sees such of an influx of revelers at weekends that the local council has resolved to make a great number of the streets traffic free on such occasions; thus allowing the bars and their patrons to spill out onto the pavements and/or into the gutter at ease. Arrange a bespoke luxury holiday with Dehouche and guarantee your table at one of Lapa’s top nightspots.

Step 3

Call a travel agent. Many travel companies have developed prearranged honeymoon packages to make planning easier.

Step 4

Do allow ample time between booking and travel to ensure that all of your dream accommodations are available.

Step 5

Build in plenty of time for rest and relaxation. Avoid overbooking day trips and tours.

Dehouche on: Are You Really Safe On Your Argentina Honeymoon?

On the whole, Argentina is a safe country. But some people will say it is safer than others, depending on who you ask. So what’s the score? Dehouche, Argentina honeymoon experts, give you the latest on staying safe in Argentina

It Depends on Who you Ask

Residents of Buenos Aires regularly complain about the rising crime rates in the city – and it’s easy to see why. Robberies and crimes are often reported in the local media which is always hungry for a good scare story.

Yes, crimes do happen here. But in a city of 13 million that’s not much of a surprise. What you have to consider is how dangerous Buenos Aires is in comparison to any other major city, and the answer is not very.

London, New York, Los Angeles – Buenos Aires is no worse than any of these in the scale of dangerous cities. A city will always bring dangers, but none that you should be overly concerned about on a honeymoon in Argentina.

The Bigger Problem: Petty Crime

Violent crime does happen in Buenos Aires, but it very rarely involves tourists. Car owners seem to be the most at risk, especially those who also own large houses in the quieter outskirts of the city.

Tourists visiting the main highlights, as you will be doing on your Argentina honeymoon, the biggest danger will come from pickpockets and petty thieves. And when it comes to staying safe in the city, a few simple rules are always worth following to minimise the risks:

Don’t Look Lost

If you can avoid looking lost during your Argentina honeymoon, you will have more chance off passing off as a local. Although it can be tempting to drag out the Lonely Planet in the middle of the street to find out where you went wrong, you’d do better to take it into a café where you can peruse the pages for as long as you want. Alternatively, buy yourself a cheap ‘Guia-T’, the same guide that all the locals use.

Never Leave Bags Alone

Wherever you are and whatever time of the day it is, your bags pose a tempting target for thieves. You’re bound to meet at least one person who has had their belongings stolen while they were drinking a coffee in a crowded café. Keep your bags close on your Argentina honeymoon, leaving them either on your lap or under the table next to your feet, and never leave them alone on your chair unattended.

Be Alert and Have Fun

Argentina really is a safe country to travel to and if you take a few precautions then you’re unlikely to have any problems on your Argentina honeymoon. Follow Dehouche’s advice to try not to look like a tourist too much, and keep your wits about you, and you’ll be fine wherever you go.

Let Dehouche arrange your luxury boutique hotel and transportation requirements, allowing you to enjoy a whole host of insider tips on where to truly escape from it all on your vacation.

Santa Teresa in Rio perfect for Honeymooners

Luxury travel specialists ‘Dehouche’ like to steer their clients away form the main tourist hubs. The majority of visitors to Rio flock to the city’s beachside neighbourhoods of Copacabana, Ipanema and Leblon, often overlooking the more Bohemian neighborhood of Santa Teresa, yet this delightful neighborhood has much to offer the luxury traveler.

One of Dehouche’s favorite hotels in Rio has to be the relatively newly opened ‘Hotel Santa Teresa’ situated at the very heart of this charming neighborhood.

Housed in a beautifully restored former colonial mansion, the hotel boasts a ‘Natura’ spa, Franco-Brazilian restaurant and the most romantic bar in Rio and is undoubtedly an ideal honeymoon destination.

This largely undiscovered neighborhood, is situated just a twenty minute taxi ride from the marvelous city’s famous Atlantic beaches of Copacabana and Ipanema. However, Dehouche clients who opt to stay here discover that there is more to this city than just the beach as you quickly find out on one of Dehouches’ tailor made off-track tours of the city.

Still served by the traditional yellow tram which winds the maze of cobbled streets and crumbling colonial mansions nestled amongst tropical Atlantic rainforest, Santa Teresa is home to local artists and musicians and it’s not uncommon to find spontaneous musical performances on street corners being enjoyed by locals and visitors alike.

Sometimes referred to as the ‘Montmartre of the Tropics’, like its Parisian counterpart, the area has much to offer the ‘bon vivant’ in terms of gastronomic delights. For those who truly want to escape it all, Dehouche recommends the restaurant retreat of ‘Aprazível’ (or ‘Pleasant’ in Portuguese) and pleasantly surprised you will be if you venture up here. The elevated position of the neighborhood means it enjoys unrivalled panoramic views of the city and this restaurant is located at the very summit a perfect spot appreciate the city and complete bay area and a perfect location as part of a longer Dehouche as created by Dehouche the expert in South American Honeymoons.

Those who travel with Dehouche benefit from a whole host of insider tips on where to go and what to avoid and the team’s expert local knowledge ensures your stay in Brazil will be absolutely unforgettable.

Dehouche on Last-Minute Holiday in Brazil Private Island Paradise

Plan the perfect luxury vacation on a private island in Brazil just off the coast of Rio de Janeiro. This luxury villa in Paraty is currently available on a very special last-minute vacation this Christmas and New Year. The pool villa is available at a special pricing package for this holiday season.

This stretch of coast is some of the most beautiful in all of Brazil: The delightfully warm, calm sea surrounds some 365 beautiful tropical islands, each with a plentiful supply of deserted beaches ready for you to explore, and dramatic emerald green mountains that arc up towards the sky.

Tropical island life is quite sublime: your private villa has 3 double bedrooms and one twin spread out over three houses designed to maximize views out to sea and have a bright airy feel that is particularly apparent in the beautiful communal areas. Fatima, the house keeper, ensures all is kept in perfect order and puts her excellent cooking skills to good use with meals tailored to individual preference and the local fisherman’s catch.
Days are spent relaxing on the nearby secluded beach and wandering the many jungle tracks to various viewpoints on the island. You will also have a speedboat at your disposal for some water skiing or to take you to one of the other nearby islands, many of which are completely deserted. And when you finally feel it might be time for a little action, Paraty is just 10 minutes away. The town is incredibly charming colonial era port (and a UNESCO world heritage site) with lovely architecture and an excellent selection of shops, restaurants and bars.

Dehouche Suggests “Gorgeous Praia Da Pipa”- Perfect for A Romantic Honeymoon In Brazil

The village of Pipa is one of the most beautifully situated in all of Brazil, with a lagoon to its west and the tropical Atlantic Ocean to the east. The local topography is diverse and very impressive, ranging from towering cliffs and enormous white sand dunes to secluded coves and natural swimming pools, mostly fringed by Atlantic Rainforest. But of course the main reason for coming here is the glorious beaches that stretch for miles up and down the coast; the joy is that you can often have an entire beach to yourselves, perfect for romantic strolls as the sun sets on another blissful day. The beach below the village itself was named in the ‘Guia 4 Rodas’ (Brazil’s most respected impartial travel book) as one of the 10 most beautiful beaches in Brazil, and it’s easy to understand why as you amble along in the shade of the extensive coconut palm trees. Around the corner you will find the Baia dos Golfinhos - this is the dolphins favourite location, where you are practically guaranteed to see them playing in the waves and where you may be lucky enough to swim right alongside these remarkable animals, the bay is also frequented by turtles. Further down the coast is the Praia do Amor, where some of the best surfing in north east Brazil is to be found. It is also the most lively beach on which to enjoy a few sundowners.

Besides the excellent surfing, there are many other exciting activities on offer, ranging from boat trips and dune buggy excursions to canoeing and horse riding. Heading out on a well equipped boat in search of marlin and other deep sea fish is another enjoyable way to spend a day. Although still small and retaining its laidback charm, the village of Pipa is a fashionable destination and therefore has several excellent restaurants. Rio based luxury agency Dehouche keep their finger on the pulse and are always up to date with the best options. Currently they include a tapas restaurant that has some very creative offerings, some excellent places for fresh seafood and a wonderfully located restaurant with a great 7 course tasting menu. After dinner there are lots of lively bars to choose from, a nightclub in the village and also a nightclub on the beach, where the live reggae on a Thursday night is a particular highlight.

For accommodation, Dehouche can secure perhaps the best room for honeymooners in all of Brazil. It is in a hotel that is on the outskirts of the village and is situated in an area of private rainforest and carefully manicured gardens. The chalets within the hotel are so well spread out that you have lots of privacy, but the very well trained staffs are never far away. Your room has a veranda all the way around it and is decorated with gorgeous antique furniture. A couple of the additional features are the double waterfall showers and hidden outdoor Jacuzzi, ensuring that this is the ultimate romantic retreat for part of your Brazilian honeymoon.

Dehouche On Adventurous Honeymooners!

Dehouche, the specialists in luxury tailor made honeymoons across the South American continent organise many different adventurous experiences for couples who want more than just idyllic deserted beaches. For example what could be more romantic than a private boat trip down the Amazon. Dehouche’s favourite way to experience this unique environment is a luxury trip on your own private river boat. Itineraries are tailor made to any length of time, along the Amazon and its tributaries. Accompanied by an experienced guide, captain and a superb cook who creates culinary masterpieces from the abundant mouth watering local ingredients, this is a wonderfully peaceful and personal way to experience the Amazon.

For the more adventurous still, the company organises personalised speedboat adventures deep into the Amazon far away from all human activity. Your guides set up camp in the evening, cook a basic but delicious dinner and take care of all chores seamlessly. You sleep in hammocks under the forest canopy far away from the 21st Century and the daily grind. By day you trek in the jungle, or explore down small tributaries by kayak, wildlife spotting or perhaps stopping to fish for piranhas or peacock bass.

On another honeymoon with a difference, some couples may opt to learn a new skill, for example Dehouche organises week long kite surfing courses on the remote north coast of Brazil, staying in the small village of Jericoacoara. Clients arrive by light aircraft, a dramatic flight over the rolling sand dunes and palm tree lined coast line, and then spend the week taking private lessons with one of the area’s best instructors (and ex-champion himself), to really get to grips with this unbelievably fun sport. Evenings are spent in the low key (but surprisingly good) sandy floored bars and restaurants of the village, or Dehouche can arrange for a private meal of local seafood served to you by candle light on the beach in front of your stilted hut.

Dehouche Suggests Fabulous Honeymoon in Argentina and Brazil!

South America is one of the few continents in the world where in a single trip honeymoon couples can combine such diverse experiences as dramatic snow covered mountain scenery, tropical beaches and any range of environments in from some of the driest desert in the world to the planet’s most biologically diverse wetlands.

In the months of July through to September, after a stay in one of Buenos Aires’s chicest boutique hotels - with everything laid on by local luxury tour operator Dehouche from personal shoppers to an exclusive private dinner and wine tasting with an owner of one of Argentina’s top bodegas, couples might start their luxury honeymoon by flying down to the resort of Bariloche in the picturesque Lake District for five days skiing. With its dramatic scenery, uncrowded pistes and perfect dry snow conditions, the Andes have it all, you can experience world-class heli-skiing or learn to ski powder for the first time – tailored for any level of skier and with your own personal pilot and guide. At the end of a day skiing some of the driest powder you can find in the world, you will be rewarded with a satisfying Argentine steak and can retire to your cosy mountain lodge with a roaring fire and thick duvets. Wake the next morning to a breath-taking view of jagged peaks from every window.

Travelling into Brazil via the incomparable Iguaçu falls only for a stop over though to see the best bits – no need to share your honeymoon with the heaving masses, Dehouche clients often skip straight to the best beaches of Brazil’s northeast. The season dictates where to maximise sun, and in August they would recommend the trendy beach village of Praia da Pipa. Dehouche clients stay in surely one of the best hotel rooms in Brazil - a luxury colonial style chalet set among landscaped gardens and jungle, 5 minutes walk from one of the most stunning beaches on the coast. The waters of this dramatic coast line, north of Bahia, are frequented by rare marine turtles and dolphins, which you can spot from the beach. Natural swimming pools in the reefs and crystalline waters make for excellent snorkeling. Dehouche arrange for clients to have a speedboat at their disposal for the chance to swim with dolphins in the Baia dos Golfinhos, or stopping at deserted beaches to eat fresh oysters at a rustic waterside bar in a mangrove lined lagoon.

Let Dehouche arrange your luxury boutique hotel and enjoy a whole host of insider tips on where to truly escape from it all on your honeymoon.

Celebrate New Year’s Eve 2011 in Rio de Janeiro

Who doesn’t harbour a lifelong dream of celebrating New Year in Rio, dressed in the hippest white outfit to show off a blazing tan, as fireworks explode like confetti overhead? Ride the wave of the infectious Brazilian party spirit and welcome 2011 in with a bang. Latin America’s most marvellous city moves fast, so here are the Dehouche insider’s tips to get the very best of it.

12 pm - Start the celebrations with a long, lazy lunch at Aprazivel in Santa Teresa. This wonderful restaurant is set high up on the hill of Santa Teresa, Rio’s bohemian quarter, and has truly inspirational views of Rio, particularly from the private tree house: Just ring the bell for another passion fruit caipirinha.

3 pm - Weave your way around the stunningly restored colonial mansions, home to artists, writers and musicians, then catch some live samba at Bar do Miniero, before settling down to some serious pampering at the world class spa at Hotel Santa Teresa.

6pm - New Year just wouldn’t be the same without a show stopping outfit. Stop off at Isabella Capeto’s gorgeous atelier before heading back to your ocean front hotel suite from some serious preening. Tradition is to wear white in honour of Iemanja, the goddess of the sea.

9pm - Champagne on the rooftop pool at the Fasano party is the only place to kick off celebrations. Mix with Latin America’s glitterati over a sumptuous seafood buffer at Al mare, before heading into achingly hip Londra bar for some serious dancing.

12pm - It’s a choice between the balcony at the Copacabana Palace or a private penthouse to watch the sky burst open with an incredible fireworks display, as thousands of revellers dressed in white light candles on the beach below.

3am - Follow the fashion crowd to continue the fun at the private party held at one of Rio’s top boutique hotels, La Suite. Perched on a cliff above the sea and surrounded by jungle, its breath-taking views are almost as legendary as its parties

6am - Pick up a bottle of champagne and head to Arpoador on Ipanema beach to toast the year’s first sunrise.

9am - By now you definitely deserve some top class brunch, and what better place than lounging on a bed in Parque Lage, a beautiful restored colonial mansion surrounded by sumptuous tropical gardens.

12am - After a spot of people watching and coconut water on Ipanema beach, the feather down pillows of your hotel suite await: it’s time for a nap before cocktail hour beckons once more.

Tour do Rio by Dehouche

The ‘Tour de France’ is over for another year; the competition which began in 1903 and which annually ignites not only Gallic passion but at times international furore; from strikes (only in France) to blockades, diversions and even sneaky train rides. Yet there’s a new event to mark on the international cycling calendar, itself beginning in a city which divides the hearts of many; ambivalence is not a feeling often harboured towards the painfully beautiful Rio de Janeiro and the ‘Tour do Rio’ promises blood, toil, tears and sweat in abundance.

The first competition of its kind in Latin America, the tour is due to begin in earnest tomorrow, covering some of the most spectacular scenery the state of Rio has to offer between now and the 1st of August. Organisers hope that the event will do for Brazil what the Tour de France has done for France and the Giro d’Italia has done for Italy. The tour has already generated 1500 jobs and according to luxury Brazilian travel experts ‘Dehouche’, to some extent marks the beginning of a new era for the city, which over the coming years will host a myriad of international sporting events including both the world cup final in 2014 and the summer Olympics in 2016. However, despite the city’s association with inherent natural beauty, Rio’s residents, or Cariocas, were recently named the most obese in Brazil by local magazine ‘Veja’, suggesting the event might inspire those carrying extra kilos to get in shape, as well as offering training for potential future athletes. Ouch.

The competition to which even Lance Armstrong was invited, (though his appearance is sadly doubtful due to having just completed the Tour de France) will cover some 783km, the first stretch of which will traverse the stunning coastal road from the city of Rio to the port of Angra, on Rio’s Emerald Coast. Led by a carnival akin to that of its predecessor, the competition will go on to negotiate mountains, beaches and colonial towns as 150 athletes and an estimated 200,000 people follow the course whose road eventually leads back to the marvellous city itself and cyclists compete to cross the finish line within the inimitable bay of Botafogo, framed by Sugar loaf mountain and overlooked by Christ the Redeemer from atop the Corcovado mountain. ‘Dehouche’ who are resident locally, intend to be there to witness this exciting moment in Rio’s history.

The 26km warm up stage in the mountainous region above Rio which started in Petrópolis and wound its way towards nearby Teresopolis has already been won by Brazilian cyclist David Leite. However, the stages of the tour itself will average a sweaty 150km per day; the attraction? Total prize money of R$175,000 (approx 100,000 USD) which will be distributed amongst the first 20 to complete each of the various stages, with total prize money of R$35,000 for the overall winner; whether any yellow t-shirts or similarly themed clothing will also be awarded remains to be seen. The order of the first stage will be decided in Copacabana this evening as participants prepare themselves for the first test. None of the ‘Dehouche’ team members have signed up to participate this year as they’re far too busy taking care of clients holidays, but there’s always next year.

Surfs Up - On Honeymoon In Brazil

Considering Brazil is blessed with some 7000km of coastline and some of the world’s most beautiful beaches, the thought of spending your entire holiday in a horizontal position may be a tempting one; yet when the thermometers hit 40 degrees it’s difficult to resist the pull of the ocean.

Nevertheless, with surf school after windsurfing school after surf school lined up along some beaches, it can get confusing. Fortunately, locally based luxury travel experts Dehouche are on hand to point you in the right direction when you feel the need to cool off. Take a tailor made trip with Dehouche and they can advise you on how best to take advantage of some of the clearest waters, not to mention impressive waves that grace many of these beaches.

Surfing may have only arrived in Brazil in the 50s, but in a country where the majority of the inhabitants are concentrated along the coast, it rapidly became an integral part of the culture. To the uninitiated, the waves here may at first sight seem ferocious and passing them even as a swimmer requires a certain lack of regard for the sanctity of human life. Passing them with a board is an even greater challenge, but there’s no need to struggle alone; Dehouche’s English speaking local contacts will not only get you past the waves, but up on the board in no time, even wagering a case of beer on the prospect. Whether you’re a beginner or a pro, Dehouche can tell you both where the surfing hotspots are and the best time to visit.

Still not persuaded? If that all sounds a bit radical, then perhaps snorkelling or diving hold greater appeal. Ask Dehouche to help you arrange equipment hire and they’ll share with you Brazil’s top destinations that combine crystal clear waters and a wealth of marine life.

Of course, if you can’t decide between the two and fancy observing marine life whilst surfing, then Dehouche can also arrange this. Not yet heard of underwater surfing? Originally developed for scientific observation, this new sport has been gaining momentum in recent years and offers a more gentle way to surf, allowing you to gaze at the ocean floor as you ride your submerged magic carpet. Whatever activity entices you, Dehouche can make it happen.

Let Dehouche arrange your luxury boutique hotel and enjoy a whole host of insider tips on where to truly escape from it all on your honeymoon.

Waterfalls and Shortness of Breath! - Explains Dehouche

There’s a great deal of debate as to where you’ll find the world’s largest waterfall, not to mention just how you measure this: Width? Height? Flow? One thing’s for sure however, Iguassu falls, located on the border between Brazil and Argentina offers the visitor some of the most spectacular views, as well as the ability to get close enough to hear its roar and feel its spray – simply breathtaking!

The rivalry between Brazil and Argentina could easily be likened to that between France and England and unsurprisingly there’s also a great deal of debate as to just which side affords the best view of the falls. Argentina has claimed about two thirds of the falls as its own and some argue that this in fact serves to make the Brazilian side superior; being that it offers you a view of the Argentinean side. Perhaps the only way to put an end to the debate is to ask luxury travel experts Dehouche help you organise a tailor made itinerary to Brazil and Argentina and make up your own mind.

Dehouche can arrange accommodation on the Brazilian side in the sumptuous ‘Hotel das Cataratas’ one of very few hotels inside the park itself, where you can enjoy panoramic views as you take breakfast on the terrace. Later in the day, Dehouche can whizz you across the border to the Argentinean side, where you can take an exhilarating boat ride close enough to the falls to get seriously wet. Dry off in the sunshine before journeying to the highest point, where you can cross 1km of river by walkway, marveling at the mist that rises up to 150 meters above the falls long before you reach them. Yet little can prepare you for the experience that is peering down into the devil’s throat itself; a horseshoe shaped cataract 150m wide where the falls crash almost 300 feet to the rocks below.

In contrast to the grandeur of the falls, the towns of Foz do Iguaçu and Puerto Iguazu are little to write home about; the falls are undoubtedly the main attraction here. If you’re hoping to take in other destinations in Brazil and Argentina, you probably won’t feel the need to linger. With Dehouche as your guide, you can be sure of taking in all there is to see in as little as 24 hours, leaving ample time to explore the many other natural wonders this continent has in store as part of a fabulous luxury vacation or romantic honeymoon.

Salvador Carnival, A Fabulous Experience When Done Right - Instructs Dehouche

Carnival may be Brazil’s biggest export and the first point of reference for most is Rio, whose carnival celebrations have become internationally synonymous with Brazilian culture. Yet carnival is celebrated throughout Brazil in many different guises and has been since its conception. If you want to know where else in Brazil hosts parties worth procuring an invitation to, why not talk to Dehouche travel. Dehouche are based in Rio and as well as being loyal fans of the marvelous city are ardent lovers of travel themselves, constantly traversing the enormous landscape which is Brazil and well versed in celebrating carnival wherever they happen to find themselves; thus making them expertly positioned to recommend alternative destinations.

The Bahian city of Salvador in North East Brazil is quickly gaining a name for itself on the international circuit as a contender for Rio’s carnival crown and if the African inspired rhythms of the North East excite you, read on. Salvador’s carnival has in fact become so well known throughout Brazil that it has become a little commercialized in recent years, dominated by certain stars of the Axe brand and with ticket prices rising beyond the reach of many of its residents.

Yet there’s a not so silent revolt taking place amongst the city’s backstreets and Dehouche can tell you not only where to find it, but how to get right to the heart of it. ‘Olodum’ the most successful and enduring ‘bloco-afro’, draw on a myriad of African influences and their mix of samba, merengue, salsa and reggae gained itself the name of ‘samba reggae’. Olodum initially emerged as a cultural project, aiming to combat racism and give voice to a marginalized sector of Brazilian society, and have since helped to inspire the creation of many similar groups throughout Brazil.

The group won themselves international recognition after recordings with both Paul Simon and Michael Jackson and is these days’ active participants on Salvador’s alternative carnival circuit; with Dehouche, you too can be a participant and get dangerously close to the infectious percussion. Dehouche can give you exclusive access to Olodum’s carnival float, so you can not just admire the carnival procession, but be a very part of it.

Petropolis, Just A Short Drive from Rio De Janeiro – Avers Dehouche

For many, the first and perhaps even the only destination in Brazil is the city of Rio de Janeiro, famous worldwide for its carnival, glamorous beaches, legendary football stadium and charming residents. However, few realise that Rio also lends its name to the coastal state in which the city lies and that there are many other destinations both on the coast and inland, equally worth discovering.

Dehouche , who are based in Rio and offer tailor made luxury holidays to Brazil and Argentina, like to follow the example of Rio’s elite and take to the hills at the weekends, in search of fresh mountain air and the rare opportunity to wear a jumper.

The nearby city of Petropolis was at one time the state capital and summer residence of the Brazilian emperors and aristocracy, whose architectural legacy remains well preserved to this day. Such is its proximity to Rio Petropolis can in fact be very easily visited for the day and makes an ideal excursion when the heat of today’s state capital becomes stifling.

In addition to its colonial heritage, Petropolis is these days celebrated for its excellent restaurants. It’s worth asking Dehouche not only for a list of the best addresses, but also for the dates of the next gastronomic festival the city annually plays host to. In addition to its culinary delights, Petropolis is also known for its locally produced beer ‘Itaipava’; in keeping, the neighbourhood of Itaipava offers the liveliest beer fuelled nightlife, though it’s still all very refined. Nevertheless, for couples and honeymooners in search of a little more peace, Dehouche can tell you where to find it.

The setting of the city couldn’t be more picturesque, surrounded by dramatic peaks and for those who feel the inclination there are also numerous outdoor activities on offer in the nearby national park of ‘Serra dos Órgãos’. Ask Dehouche for the best time to visit depending on your interests as temperatures here vary a great deal more than down on the coast below. If that all sounds a bit energetic, then simply soak up the grandeur of another era, amble down cobbled streets to the sound of live music and admire unrivalled views of the mountains which envelop the city; you’d be forgiven for forgetting altogether that the frenetic pace of city life is just a few hours descent away.

Food obsessed, does it show? - Queries Dehouche

There’s long been a show of mutual cultural admiration between France and Brazil and though the latter has always been principally celebrated for its music, its reputation as a retreat for the ‘gourmandise’ is beginning to grow in strength.

Sao Paulo may hold the title as the most cosmopolitan of Brazil’s cities, with an impressive range of dining options to suit; however Rio also has something to offer the more discerning palate and for those on honeymoon, is absolutely spoilt with beautiful sunset views to linger over.

Dehouche have been providing luxury tailor made holidays to Brazil since 2003 and have made Rio their home and base; seven years of dining out here stands them in good stead when it comes to choosing a restaurant. Dehouche not only know the city inside out, but their love of food and dedication to the pursuit of pleasure means this knowledge is also kept up to the minute, unlike any paper publication.

Since the colonisation of Brazil, the cuisine of Rio has unreservedly embraced a wide range of culinary influences, the principal ingredients being the traditions of Brazil’s indigenous, the Portuguese and the Africans they brought with them as slaves. These culinary traditions have been blended together and seasoned with a little German and Italian spice to create what is contemporary Rio cuisine today.

In addition to this rich culinary heritage, Rio’s spectacular geographical setting means it’s also possible to enjoy dinner whilst enjoying breathtaking views of the ocean and rainforest covered peaks which grace this city. Nevertheless, in the city itself, it’s hard to find a restaurant with a position elevated enough to fully appreciate this. Talk to Dehouche however and they can recommend restaurants which boast just this and are perfect for dining à deux.

Dehouche can also help you to escape the city, taking you on a drive beyond the usual tourist haunts to an exclusive boutique hotel, where the hotel’s owner and chef can prepare a meal especially for you as you relax on the terrace and admire the sunset over the cityscape you’ve just left behind.
